Amazon.com began as an online bookstore, but later expanded its product offering to include DVDs , music CDs , computer software , video games , electrical appliances, clothing, furniture, food, and more. Over the past two decades, amazon.com has shifted its business strategy to operate as a reseller or intermediary, earning its main revenue from commissions on sales on its platform.
Currently, the company provides diversified services in many sectors. Its most significant businesses are related to the fields of e-commerce, logistics, and computing. Amazon owns the world’s largest cloud service , which hosts tens of millions of websites.

The company started as an online bookstore. While the largest brick-and-mortar bookstores and mail -order booksellers sold 200,000 titles, an online bookstore could sell much more. Bezos wanted a name for his company that began with the letter „A” to be at the top of the alphabetical list. He started looking at a dictionary and stopped at Amazon because it was an „exotic and different” place and the world’s largest river, and he hoped his company would be like that. Since 2000, Amazon’s logo has featured an arrow pointing from A to Z, signifying that they deliver everything from A to Z.
They launched their service in July 1995. A little later, in October 1995, the company announced itself to the public. In 1996, they relocated to Delaware .
Amazon’s initial business plan was unusual, with the company not expecting to make a profit for four to five years. When the dot-com bubble burst and many e-commerce companies exited the market, Amazon held on. Its first profit came in the fourth quarter of 2001: $5 million, or 1¢ per share. The company’s revenue at the time was over $1 billion. The profit, while modest, proved that this business model could be successful. In 1999, Time magazine named Bezos its Person of the Year , recognizing the company’s success in popularizing online shopping .
Barnes & Noble filed a lawsuit on May 12, 1997, alleging that Amazon’s claim that its store was „the world’s largest bookstore” was false. Barnes & Noble said, „It’s not a bookstore at all. It’s a book broker.” The dispute was later settled out of court. Amazon continues to call itself „the world’s largest bookstore.” Walmart filed a lawsuit on October 16, 1998, alleging that Amazon obtained trade secrets from former Walmart executives. Although that lawsuit was also settled out of court, Amazon imposed internal restrictions on the work of former Walmart executives and reassigned them.
Although Amazon achieved its first successes in the field of online commerce, by the second half of the 2000s it had gained significant market share in various other areas:

Amazon has come under fire after scammers and business coaches touted it as a “get rich quick” way for ordinary people. Selling there is indeed available to anyone, but the additional costs, the need to achieve and maintain the highest possible rating for the products to be sold, and the potential pitfalls of competition all make it much more difficult to make significant profits, as many people are unaware of the company’s operations and its often changing rules.
